Historically Hardcore

History seems woefully neglected by the media and younger generation today, it would seem. Not often are figures of historical note mentioned unless there is mudslinging to be had with political candidates. However, some authors have decided to revamp history for a younger generation, coming up with fictional gems such as Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Slayer that take the past of the famous president and splice it with an intense vampire hunt and quest for revenge. This makes one wonder: is adding fictional accounts of what's “in” the only way we can make history interesting? Two artists thought otherwise, deciding to endorse history and particularly museums in an ingenious way.

The advertisements created by Jenny Burrows and Matt Kappler of Cargo Collective put 50 Cent and Teddy Roosevelt as well as Ozzy Osbourne and Adnrew Jackson in sharp contrast both literally and figuratively. White words on a black background draw attention to how the modern person did some feat, while black text on a white backdrop tell how a former president bested the popular figure. The viewer then realizes how some of the celebrities of today can hardly compare with famous men and women in the past. Intrigued by the thought that a former president would be so “hardcore”, the viewer then sees where he or she can learn more: a museum, where things are “historically hardcore”. Originally, the advertisements were made with the Smithsonian logo, though the artist changed it when some claimed it was copyright infringement.
